In high traffic areas, you can use floor rugs to protect the floor if it`s made of expensive or nicely finished wood. However, you have to make sure the design you choose is durable and not just stylish. Preferably, the rug should be hand-made, because hand-made types are generally more durable than machine-made rugs, although this is not always the case.
There are two general kinds of material used in rug making, natural and synthetic. You can tell the value, sturdiness, feel, and look of floor rugs by the materials that they`re made of. Examples of natural materials are animal or plant fibers, including wool, cotton, sisal, jute, sea grass or bamboo. Synthetic materials on the other hand are man-made materials like viscose, rayon, nylon, acrylic or polypropylene/olefin. Each type of material has its advantages and disadvantages depending on how you want to use the floor rug. These materials can also be mixed together to make one rug, like a blend of wool and cotton, or natural and synthetic materials.
